But the company is focusing on electric now, putting its first electric performance SUV on sale next year. The Blazer SS electric vehicle (EV) was previewed Wednesday in a video and will be available in spring 2023.
The 20-second teaser clip isn’t much. It shows a charging port on the front fender of a red car with a charging plug. It is removed and the door automatically closes. We then get a shot of the wheel, with a red SS logo on the lip.
The new Blazer SS EV will use the company’s Ultium platform and batteries, and GM President Mark Reuss said it would be both “affordable” and “high-volume.” Affordable is of course relative, with the current average transaction price of a new vehicle cresting $47,000, according to Kelley Blue Book.
The current Chevrolet Blazer just received an update for 2023. It gets a new front fascia, new grille and new LED lights all around. It also has a new 10-inch touch screen, new wheels choices and wireless charging. It keeps the same engine choices: a turbocharged four-cylinder making 228 horsepower or a 3.6-liter six-cylinder delivering 308 hp.
“Of all current crossovers in Chevrolet’s lineup from Trax to Equinox, data from AutoPacific’s 2021 BRANDS Study shows that Blazer owners are the most likely to buy an EV for their next vehicle purchase,” AutoPacific industry analyst Robby DeGraff told Newsweek.
The Blazer SS EV will lose a little bit of the Chevrolet Camaro look when it launches because it won’t need that huge grille to keep an engine cool. It will take some cues from the recently revealed Chevrolet Equinox, which debuted in January, but with a performance-oriented look.
“While some bowtie purists will cringe at the idea of the storied “SS” treatment being applied to an electric crossover, Chevrolet is doing the right thing by introducing an attainable performance-focused flavor of its upcoming Blazer EV,” said DeGraff.
“As we’ve come to see, dual-motor all-wheel-drive electric drivetrains have already proven to be impressively capable, rewarding buyers with screeching instant acceleration and big amounts of power. The Blazer SS EV should (and probably will) attract a wide mix of buyers.”
